2013 Year in Review
Just over a year ago Heather and Andrew Lynds, with their son Ethan, came to The Valley sight unseen and bought the Mad River Barn on Route 17 in Fayston. They ran it during the 2012-2013 ski season and last spring began a massive reconstruction and rehabilitation project.
The Lyndses have lived in many states (CT, KS, MI [three times], CA, NY, NJ ) and Brazil as they moved around for work.
They're Mad River Glen skiers; their son attends Fayston Elementary School. They toiled like yeoman on the project all spring summer and fall. The work they undertook was extensive.
The farmhouse was jacked up and a new foundation installed along with geothermal heat, new windows, a whole lot of insulation, an addition for a kitchen, a dormer for two hostel-style bunkrooms upstairs and a ski tuning room and new foyer. The farmhouse was taken down to the original beams, which remain visible.
Their new geothermal heating system takes advantage of an artesian well on the site that had been creating a boggy area on the property. Thirty percent of their heat and all of their cooling will come from the geothermal system.
The rickety stairs on the outside of the inn were torn down and replaced with interior stairs. The couple has completely gutted and rebuilt the eight room inn with a new kitchen, new dining room, new game room, new living room, new balcony, new patio, all new guest rooms and even a handicap-accessible room.
The new restaurant/pub will be open to the public and the inn will be hosting weddings as well.
New windows across the back of the pub on the second floor fill the room with light and the original pine paneling from the original inn had been removed, stored and restored before going back up. As part of the renovation of the rooms they have created a couple of suites as well as a room with a loft.
