Last December, the Moretown Development Review Board (DRB) granted Moretown Landfill a continuance on its application to construct a fourth trash cell so that the Route 2 facility could focus on recertifying its existing cells. The DRB continued its Cell 4 hearings on Thursday, May 2, one day after the landfill announced it was withdrawing its application and would be submitting a new application that better addresses town concerns.
Moretown Landfill's Cell 4 expansion application was submitted by Interstate Waste Services in January of 2012, months before Advanced Disposal Services took over the facility in September of 2012. "As new owners of [Moretown Landfill], we have now had a chance to make a careful evaluation of the landfill site and its expansion plans," Advanced Disposal regional vice president Dave Lavender said in a May 1 letter to DRB chair John Riley explaining the company's reason for withdrawing the landfill's application.
"As a result of this evaluation, we believe we can improve the application and address the previous concerns raised by the DRB," Lavender wrote, explaining that Advanced Disposal plans to submit a new application by late summer.
The DRB reconvened on Thursday as planned to formally acknowledge receipt of Lavender's letter. The board accepted the notice of withdrawal of the application and agreed that, without a pending application, it has no reason to conduct further hearings on the matter at the moment.
The landfill is also involved in permitting issues at the state level where it is appealing an Agency of Natural Resources permit denial that was issued in March. That decision denied the landfill the ability to re-open previously closed cells and required it to close its doors by April 15. The landfill appealed that decision and asked that it be allowed to operate during the appeal process. That request was granted and the landfill remains open for business until July 15.
