Does anyone remember the Single Chair rendered in dyed spaghetti and built on a foundation of icing snow? Or, how about an oversized Candyland board, complete with mountains of real candy? Whether the favorite was The Wizard of Oz, King Kong, or maybe you loved Santa’s workshop, there is something for everyone when it comes to gingerbread. Some love to build, some to create, some love to be inspired, and some just love to look.
This year one of The Valley’s favorite traditions returns after a three-year break. The Warren Gingerbread Contest, which started in 2001, is back by popular demand. The event was a holiday favorite for eight consecutive years, first at the Warren School, then the Round barn, then the Warren Town Hall for several years, then at the Big Picture in 2007, then back to the Warren Town Hall in 2009. The event is a fundraiser for the Warren After School Program (WASP) now in its 23rd year at the Warren School. This year the event will be held upstairs at the East Warren Schoolhouse with the Gingerbread show on display December 8, 9 and 10.
This year, local nonprofit group Open Hearth has stepped up to sponsor this event, as WASP (a 23-year staple at the Warren School) is experiencing tight financial times and could not put on this event without help.
WASP invites all Valley citizens to join in this holiday magic. To help facilitate individual projects, WASP will be making 300 pounds of dough on November 6 in the giant mixer at American Flatbread (who generously donated their kitchen for the project). The building gingerbread dough goes on sale on November 12 at the Warren School and the East Warren Community Market. All proceeds go to the fundraiser. There will be a workshop at the East Warren Schoolhouse on November 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. for tips and training and a candy sale.
The official gingerbread judging will take place on Friday, December 7, at 8 p.m. The Gingerbread display will be open to the public December 8, 9 and 10 upstairs at the East Warren Schoolhouse for all to enjoy!
