Chris Mattrick, a representative from Green Mountain National Forest (GMNF), attended the Warren Select Board meeting on Tuesday, August 28, to provide updates on projects that are currently taking place in the town’s federally-protected forested areas.
One of the main issues currently facing the GMNF in Warren is the lack of parking at Warren Falls. With only a small space for cars to pull in and park at the entrance to the falls, many are parking along the street on Route 100, along a curved section from which it can sometimes be difficult for oncoming traffic to see cars pulling in and out.
“We’re concerned about the safety in that stretch of road,” Mattrick, the acting district ranger for Middlebury and Rochester Ranger Districts, said. For this reason, fixing the parking problem at Warren Falls has moved to the top of the GMNF’s priority list.
Right now, the GMNF is working on a still conceptualized plan to push back the guardrail in front of the entrance and create a parking lot for 20 to 30 cars. They are hoping to construct the lot sometime next year, most likely in the fall.
Mattrick also discussed plans for parking up by Blueberry Lake, as the GMNF will construct a new lot on the west side of the road, across the street from the lake.
Warren boasts a number of areas that are protected and maintained in conjunction with the GMNF and the new parking plans hope to make these areas even more accessible. Soon, even the most car-protective locals will have one less excuse not to brave the crowds at Warren Falls and Blueberry Lake.
