The work is necessary for MWC to comply with Vermont Water Supply Regulations as well as the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, which addresses aging infrastructure and obsolete technology.

MWC has advertised locally for contractors and will accept bids through July 1, 2011. The work is scheduled to be completed by late fall.

The list of projects includes replacing an aging steel water reservoir, replacing water mains with a history of numerous failures, upgrading select water mains to eight inches in diameter, replacing fire hydrants with flushing hydrants where required, upgrading water meter reading systems and water meters where necessary, providing for additional corrosion control as required and upgrading the telemetry systems and engineering required for the upgrade projects.

The work will be done in a strategic and sequential fashion, and MWC will communicate directly with local residents about any possible changes to their water service.

MWC’s system was originally developed in the late 1960s and has grown incrementally as new growth and new regulations have required. Today, MWC provides service to 20 commercial and 630 residential connections. The system has 11 drilled bedrock wells, 401,000 gallons of storage capacity in seven storage tanks, and a surface water filtration plant.
