The board took that action at its March 28 hearing. Mark Walker was appointed second constable at that meeting. The town’s first constable is Peter Laskowski, who is also a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy.
At that meeting, the board reviewed information from the Washington County Sheriff’s office about the patrol program in The Valley. Warren also participates in the patrol program through its own contract with the sheriff’s department.
The Waitsfield program is budgeted at $23,500 for 2011. The town is reimbursed by Warren for miles that the sheriff’s deputy drives Waitsfield’s cruiser in that town. Washington County Sheriff Sam Hill prepared figures for the town regarding the number and types of incidences his deputies are responding to in Waitsfield.
From April 1 through June 30, 2010, there were 36 speeding stops made, six stops made for drivers speeding more than 50 mph over the limit, two stops for uninspected vehicles and a variety of other stops made for reasons such as display of plates, driving with license suspended and operating without insurance. In that time period, there were 55 stops reported.
A separate report details 18 incidents investigated including two for possession of regulated drugs, two for driving under the influence, three agency assists, one citizen dispute, four suspicious person/circumstance reports and a handful of other incidents.
A report on traffic stops from July to December 2010 revealed 166 stops, 127 for exceeding the speed on local roads, 16 for driving more than 50 mph over the limit, six for driving with a suspended license, four for driving an uninspected vehicle, and four for having no registration.
During that same time period, the sheriff’s department investigated three drivers for driving under the influence, one incidence of driving with license suspended, three incidences of driving under the influence, five agency assists, two citizen disputes, three motorist assists, and three suspicious person/circumstance reports.
