Moretown is switching up Town Meeting this year to make it easier for people to attend and engage the annual spring ritual of participatory democracy.
“What you say at Town Meeting matters,” said spokesperson Karen Horn who shared this year’s changes.
Moretown Pre-Town Meeting is Tuesday, February 18, at 6 p.m. at Moretown Elementary School cafeteria. Moretown Town Meeting is Tuesday, March 4, p.m. at Moretown Elementary School gym. Child care will be provided and a town potluck will follow. Australian ballot voting will be across the parking lot at the Town Office from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“Vermont Town Meeting is direct democracy practiced in its purest form and has been in place since before Vermont became the 14th state on March 4, 1791,” Horn said.
“Town Meeting is the key to your town government – voters determine town business and approve the town budget for the coming year. Few states even contemplate allowing local voters to decide the town budget and answer governance questions the way Vermont towns do. Your voice makes Town Meeting successful. And indeed, it is crucial to the vitality of your hometown. Local government in Vermont is participatory government. We need you to participate,” she added.
“The slopes will have closed, the work day is almost over, children will be provided entertainment, and potluck dinner awaits you at the school. Plan to bring your favorite dish and join neighbors at Moretown Town Meeting,” she said.
