In honor of its sales growth, job growth and community service within the past three years, Red Hen Bakery located at Camp Meade in Middlesex was awarded the 12th Annual CVEDC Small Business of the Year Award. Co-owner and founder Eliza Cain accepted the award on behalf of the business.

The bakery, also owned by her husband Randy George, started when the couple moved back to Vermont after being away for several years. They started their company in Duxbury and two years ago moved into new space at the former Camp Meade in Middlesex.

In her acceptance of the award she noted that her original business model planned for two employees. Currently the company employs 24 full- and part-time employees who work collectively 364 days a year and they bake and deliver their artisan bread seven days a week to ensure freshness.

She also noted that Red Hen Bakery has recently introduced a new bread for this year, the "Cyrus Pringle," made with wheat grown by Tom Kenyon's Aurora Farm in Charlotte, VT, and Ben Gleason's farm in Bridport, VT. Their plan is to increase usage of Vermont grains as they become available.

CVEDC held its 32nd annual meeting on Thursday, September 17, at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier. This year's topic was the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding and guest speakers Peter Van Oot and William Dodge, both of Downs Rachlin & Martin, spoke at the event.

CVEC Executive Vice President Sam Matthews talked about expansion projects happening in the area and President Steve Gurin also spoke about Central Vermont's economy.
