My bookkeeping career started in 1978, as secretary and bookkeeper for Robert J. Holden (currently Hall & Holden, CPAs of Waitsfield). Following that, I worked as a consultant for several Central Vermont businesses regarding accounting and bookkeeping procedures and was a statewide trainer and installer of accounting software programs.
I am running for town treasurer and trustee of public money because there is currently a need for someone with strong accounting skills in our town office and the timing is right for me to utilize my accumulated skills to fill this need.
I have been asked about my decision to run exclusively for the position of town treasurer, instead of the usual trend to run for both town clerk and treasurer. I discovered through my experience working in the Town Clerk's office over the past year, that these two positions require more than one full-time person to adequately accomplish the tasks necessary to serve the public's best interest.
Focusing my efforts as treasurer will allow me to best accomplish the job. The town clerk will have the opportunity to focus on her responsibilities without the additional burden of treasurer. The advantage of having two individuals acting as clerk and treasurer will be improved accountability and time management and will allow each person to perform their position as elected.
My priorities as treasurer will be to maintain accurate financial records, to prepare financial reports in a timely manner, to establish a relationship between town officials and staff by means of constructive communication, and to ensure the town maintains acceptable accounting practices. In 2007, I completed the automation of the town's payroll records to expedite the process of preparing payroll and necessary filing requirements.
I will continue to automate other manual systems for accuracy and efficiency. I believe that my past experience in the area of accounting and office management will be a benefit to provide a competent public service for Moretown. As a resident of Moretown since 1984, I look forward to serving my neighbors and our community as town treasurer and trustee of public money.
