Sugarbush/Win Smith pledge $100,000

Sugarbush president Win Smith, his wife Lili Ruane and Sugarbush announced a pledge of $100,000 to the Mad River Valley Community Fund Flood Relief fund on Wednesday, August 31.

That contribution comes less than 24 hours after the Community Fund announced the re-creation of its Flood Relief fund. In addition to this latest large donation, hundreds and hundreds of donations have been coming in, with $28,000 raised by noon on Wednesday.

As soon as possible, the community fund will begin providing grants to families and businesses who suffered losses due to Hurricane Irene.

After the flood of 1998, the Mad River Valley Community Fund distributed over $100,000 in flood relief.

The Community Fund was created in 1989 after a Valley resident suffering from a long-term illness was forced to admit to her friends that she was experiencing dire financial difficulty and in danger of losing her home.

At that time, no public assistance program was available to address her needs. A fundraising effort was commenced and the response from the community was immediate and generous.

During the weeks that followed it became apparent that other members of the community were similarly situated but either hesitated to make their plight a public concern or simply lacked the network of friends necessary to mount a fundraising effort on their behalf.

The Mad River Valley Community Fund was founded to provide interim, confidential assistance to those residents of the community who need help but whose needs are not covered by existing assistance programs.
