Coming April 2018, Harwood Union High School (HUHS) will host a select group of students to deliver impassioned, entertaining speeches to the community in an event titled TEDxHarwoodUnionHighSchool.
The event will be open to the public and each talk will be recorded and publicized under the auspices of TEDx Youth. Students are already developing their speech and preparing for the event with teachers, coaches and peer mentors to deliver these speeches.
A global, nonprofit company centered upon inspirational speeches, the mission of TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) is to “make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.” The official conference is held only a few times a year around the world by leading professionals, while TEDx events are run regularly by local, independent coordinators who strive to spread the experience of sharing grand ideas.
TEDx Youth events represent a subset of these and HUHS is the only high school to be running a youth event in Vermont this academic year, explained Alex Rawson, Harwood Union math and science teacher who handled Harwood’s application and is the lead coordinator of TEDxHarwoodUnionHighSchool.
Even though the event is happening four months from now, community members are needed to get involved and become a mentor or help these young adults develop their talk and hone their speech skills.
“We would love for community members who enjoy TED talks to get in touch and join in the fun,” Rawson said.
“We are looking for mentors, content specialists, technical support, speech training and anything else community members feel they might be able to contribute to the program,” he noted.
