At a select board meeting Monday, board chair Paula Mastroberardino said the petition has been reviewed by an attorney and was turned over to the office of the Vermont State Auditor.
After several conversations regarding how to proceed, Mastroberardino said state auditor Tom Salmon offered to come to Moretown for the public forum.
Officials representing Sullivan Powers and Company-the accounting firm hired to audit the town's books-are expected to attend as well, Mastroberardino said. The date for the meeting will likely be June 18.
She said the state auditor plans to review the completed audit prior to the meeting, allowing him to field questions about the audit and the town's finances.
Mastroberardino said she expected to meet with the accountants regarding the audit this week. Once the audit is finished, the information will be made available to town residents.
The work by Sullivan Powers and Company may answer many questions residents have regarding the town's accounts, Mastroberardino said, adding that their report is slated to include a letter that lists problems with and ways to improve bookkeeping practices.
"None of our past audits really had a complete management letter," she said.
Although at this point plans do not include a state audit of the town's finances, Mastroberardino told a small group of residents at the Monday meeting that if the state auditor's office reviews the audit and a "red flag goes up," further action is a possibility.
The citizens' petition followed a Town Meeting discussion and vote regarding the town report. Residents voted down the report because it lacked all of the necessary year-end information regarding town accounts for the second year in a row.
