Pam Marino was appointed as Waitsfield's new town clerk and treasurer on September 19 and resigned on October 2.

She was replacing outgoing town clerk and treasurer Jennifer Peterson. She came to the town from TDBank and she resigned to be rehired at that bank.

"My current employer has offered me a significant pay increase to remain employed with them. This offer was totally unexpected and extremely hard to reject. Therefore, with mixed emotions, I must inform you that I have decided to remain employed at TDBank and will not begin work on Monday, October 6, at the town of Waitsfield as we had originally agreed upon," Marino wrote in her resignation letter.

The town offices had to be closed on October 3 and 6 without a town clerk. The town offices will also be closed this Friday, October 10.

Waitsfield Select Board interviewed candidates for the clerk and treasurer position in advance of the board's October 6 meeting. At the October 6 meeting, the board met in executive session and came out to appoint former assistant town clerk Janet Smith as the town clerk until her retirement on October 31. The board also appointed Peterson as town treasurer.

Town administrator Valerie Capels explained that Smith will now appoint Renee Pierce as assistant town clerk and Peterson will appoint Kellee Mazer as assistant treasurer. When Smith retires, the town intends to appoint Pierce to fill the balance of the town clerk's elected term until next March.

When Peterson resigns as treasurer the select board will appoint Mazer to fill the balance of that term until next March. When that happens Pierce could appoint Mazer as the assistant town clerk.

Peterson submitted her resignation in September, with her last day of work slated for September 26. Peterson has taken a position at the Cabot/Agri-Mark Cooperative where she will manage accounts receivable.

Peterson was appointed town clerk and treasurer in 2006 following the resignation of former clerk Sandy Gallup. Janet Smith was first appointed assistant clerk by then town clerk Angela Neill 23 years ago in September 1991. Her elected role as delinquent tax collector will remain unchanged.
