Work will begin on the Route 100 paving project on Monday, August 25.
The project involves resurfacing/repaving from Fiddlers Green at the south end of Waitsfield and continues north to the intersection of Routes 100 and 100B where the project will follow Route 100 through Duxbury to the intersection of Route 100 and Route 2.
The first part of the project will start at Waitsfield Telecom and will involve grinding up and recycling of the existing asphalt, mixing it with new asphalt to resurface the road. That will take place all next week.
The following Tuesday, after Labor Day, work will begin in Waitsfield Village where the road will be ground up and new asphalt will be laid down. That work will continue south to Fiddlers Green.
The balance of the project, proceeding north on Route 100 to the intersection of Route 100 and Route 2, will take place throughout September and into the first two weeks of October.
VTrans has awarded the contract for repaving from Waitsfield to Moretown this summer to Frank Whitcomb Construction Corporation of Colchester. The $3.5 million project will run through mid-October.
Tyler Whitcomb, spokesperson for the company, said that the work would entail one-way lane closures with the most intensive work occurring in the Waitsfield Village area. He said that closer to Route 100B the work would entail a machine that will grind up the asphalt and lay it back down. Further north from the 100 and 100B intersection to the intersection of Routes 2 and 100 the project will simply be repaving.
Workers will be present six days a week.
The project is funded 81 percent by the federal government and 19 percent by the state of Vermont.
Other summer road work projects include the replacement of state highway bridge number 166 on Route 100 south of Warren. Work on that bridge began on August 4 and the portion that required closing the road was completed on August 16, two days earlier than expected. That project required closure of Route 100 at the site while workers were present 24/7. The contractor for the $1,638,450 project is Luck Brothers Inc.
The bridge was replaced with Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods to reduce the duration of the road closure. That ABC method is also planned for 2016 when the work on the bridge over the Mad River between American Flatbread and The Elusive Moose takes place.
