To The Editor:
I have just completed my annual cleanup of the area along North Road from White Pine Drive to Tremblay Road, the stretch of road I take responsibility for each Green Up Day. I very much enjoy doing this – making my small contribution to my community, looking closely at the area right near my house that I regularly only drive by. Green Up Day is a great Vermont tradition – we all pitch in because we care about our state and have a collective goal of keeping Vermont green and beautiful. (And a shout-out to Valerie Snapp who does such a good job of organizing Waitsfield volunteers.)
But this year my Green Up activities left me angry. While one expects some amount of trash to have accumulated along the road after a long winter, it is quite another thing to come upon over a hundred scattered cans and bottles. That is what I found across the barrier on North Road, going downhill, near the stream. Never have my Green Up Day bags been so overflowing – I could barely drag them to the corner for pick-up.
Who are you? Why don't you care about the community and state you live in? Why am I picking up your trash?
While I am glad to do my part in Green Up Day, this great Vermont tradition should not negate personal responsibility. Clean up your own mess!
