‘Opportunity to vote’

To The Editor:

The comments presented at Town Meeting regarding Article 11 on the adoption of a budget by Australian ballot were cogent and articulate regarding the value and need of Town Meeting but did not address the problem.

The fact is that around 200 citizens were deciding how much tax money was to be spent and over 1,000 citizens who are taxpayers and also eligible voters had nothing to say and could not vote because they were not at the meeting. You may say that everyone "should attend" Town Meeting but not "must attend" Town Meeting in order to vote.

These citizens have been disenfranchised. The solution to this is an Australian ballot. This would allow all eligible voters who cannot or decide not to attend Town Meeting the opportunity to vote.
