To The Editor:
I thought the squabble over the Waitsfield town offices couldn't get more foolish, but the letters in last week's Valley Reporter proved me wrong.
Should the select board not have accepted a substantial gift to help purchase a property that voters approved, by a wide margin, two months ago? Rejecting this offer would be negligent and irresponsible.
The board took on the demanding task of finding new town offices that enrich Waitsfield Village at the lowest cost to local taxpayers. They succeeded far beyond all reasonable expectations. Because of gifts and grants secured by the board, the new building will cost the town practically nothing and the Main Street location is picture-perfect for town offices. Town leaders deserve kudos, not condemnation.
And who can blame the donor for wanting to remain anonymous? A small, outspoken group has constantly rubbished those who don't support the much more expensive and uncertain church option. Why would this person want to expose themselves to shameful accusations of dishonesty, conspiracy mongering over secret agendas and manipulating the system and the sour grumbling about not being listened to after 60 percent of the voters approved the plan?
I hope Waitsfield voters have a more rational perspective than these letter writers.
