To The Editor:
We agree completely with The Valley Reporter editor regarding the recently (permanently) installed flashing radar signs that now welcome visitors and residents alike to our villages. They are distracting and ugly and certainly are not in keeping with the quaint, country village theme that we want to perpetuate in Vermont.
Why do our select boards eagerly accept grant monies without thinking about the impact and without consulting the town residents? One day these ugly signs just appeared in Warren. At least the Fayston board plans on consulting their residents before installing the lights or other Safe Routes to School proposals. Do they really think that schoolchildren are going to walk long distances to school when there are buses that stop at their doors? Do they really think that these flashing signs will change this mindset?
We can't possibly imagine how a car could be speeding after making the sharp turn into Warren Village at the north entrance. This shows that not much thought was given to the placement of these signs.
Let's be honest. These signs are a waste of the taxpayers' money and the folly of a few in Montpelier. With the rather large shortfall in our national and state budgets, this money could be put to a much better use. Perhaps the state could add it to travel and tourism so that more visitors will come to our Valley and we can all benefit from it.
