To The Editor:

There will be a public hearing at the Waitsfield Elementary School on December11 to discuss the New town office project. Now that the cost of renovating the Methodist Church seems prohibitive, the only other option is the Flemer Farm Stand site. It would be important for all residents to attend this meeting, as the outcome could be the spending of $1.6 million of our money.

The floor plans and elevation plans show a very nice two-story building with an elevator between floors (required). Upon closer examination of the second floor plan, which is shown as having 2,009 square feet interior area, there is approximately 1,344 square feet of unusable space. This includes the elevator, two stairways, an open area to the lobby below and the walkway space around. There are only six small offices and two meeting rooms on this floor.

Now, I am not an architect, but I took the first floor plan, extended the width of the building by as little as eight feet across the back, and there was more than enough space to accommodate the upstairs rooms. By eliminating the elevator, two stairways, etc., a larger storeroom is possible and a 35- to 40-person meeting room. Why isn't a single-story building another option? It may save the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Anyone else feel this way? I'm just wondering.
