I helped Ike Folsom hay several summers in between the end of school and the start of my summer jobs. We got used to the 50-pound bales and then we hit the alfalfa field -- 70 to 90 pound bales.

The hot weather haying beverage you describe is called switchel.  Below is a recipe from my grandmother.

Hay Makers' Switchel

Old-time farmer's summer drink during hot weather, especially in the hay fields.

2 quarts of water

½ c vinegar

1 c sugar

½ T ginger

½ c molasses

Mix thoroughly and let cool.

I have seen some recipes that include oatmeal.
