Oftentimes, it is kids that can spend the most time indoors on the computer. Today, I urge everyone, especially parents, to use the summer as a time to break your kids away from the computer and force them outside.
Technology is my life, and I spend eight hours a day working around it. But, I make it a goal to spend as little time around it as possible. The internet and video games are addictive, and without proper moderation things can get out of hand. As a parent, make sure you limit how much time your child spends around these distractions, especially as the weather gets nice.
It seems that our society is becoming less and less outdoorsy and that’s alarming. Computers are our friends and are a valuable tool but should not be used as more than that. Let your kids check their email, the news and talk with friends, but don’t let them browse the internet alone for long periods of times.
A computer is a powerful tool and just like you wouldn’t let your kid play with a power saw alone, you shouldn’t let them use the computer alone. As I said, technology is an excellent tool and can bring a lot of enjoyment. Just make sure you and your kids use it sparingly and enjoy the outdoors.
