The owner of a small convenience store told me that he pays about
$29,000/year in fees, that when one buys a cup of coffee and maybe a
donut using a card, it's probably easier for him to give it to the
customer instead of making maybe two cents!
I only pay with cash -- or a check for larger items. I take out about
$100 at a time from my checking account, am far more aware of what I
spend, I pay no interest charges, and it certainly keeps control of my
spending. In addition, especially for those who don't keep careful track
of their transactions, I never have overcharge fees, as do many who
don't keep track.
As one line in <MI>The Times Argus<D> recently said, "Cash
might just be the wave of the future." I hope so. Our local stores would
rejoice, and a new law will permit Vermont stores to set a minimum
amount for credit card purchases (debit cards also take a large toll,
however).
