I am privileged to have grown up in such a tight-knit community that is notorious for pulling together in times of need. On Wednesday, July 7, 2010, a generous group of local volunteers watched their work blossom on the main soccer field at Harwood. These residents had graciously donated their time, materials and labor to completely re-turf the field, in time to be ready for soccer season this fall.

Sometime on the evening of July 9, a car was driven across the field, destroying the beautiful gift. The car, no doubt, was operated by a student of Harwood Union High School. What a slap in the face.

It wasn't long ago that my friends and I enjoyed blowing donuts and breaking rules; we just did it in our own backyards. Since when is having a complete lack of respect for your school, community and peers acceptable?

I cringe at the thought that these kids are walking around, laughing and proud of the damage they have done. Have they not considered their classmates who were looking forward to playing on that field? They must never have been taught the importance in giving and the even greater importance in appreciation. My mom called them manners. It is malevolent little brats like this who discourage others' kindness.

I would like to encourage those at fault to apologize, but I highly doubt they read this paper.
