"Nonhuman primates pose serious husbandry, physical injury, disease
transmission and ecologic risks. Monkeys can contract many illnesses
from humans that pose a serious threat to their health.
"To my knowledge, there are no veterinarians in Vermont that have been
properly trained to treat non-human primates. If a monkey had an
illness or emergency, it would have to travel to Boston for care.
"I hope you will vote against this amendment, and please contact me if
you have any questions about animal health issues."
To this I would add: I treated a couple non-human primates here in
Vermont two decades ago, learned I was a lone veterinarian willing to
take some substantial personal risk to do so. Working with these animals
is difficult at best.
