An institution that is not open to all is not strong. Over time
marriage laws have evolved to remove some discriminatory barriers.
Imagine if inter-racial marriage were still illegal. Gay marriage is no
different. It is a matter of civil rights.
There are several good resources available about the topic. One that I
strongly recommend is the "Marriage Equality" section of the United
Church of Christ web site at www.ucc.org/lgbt/issues/marriage-equality.
I agree with Eleonore Campbell, that there are problems with the
economy, immigration and marriage. However, I believe that many of the
problems come from bigotry, not from an attack on tradition.
This country will only be at its strongest when we accept and care for
all our residents with love, compassion and equal rights under our
laws. A society in which discrimination is legal is a flawed and weak
society.
The children of this state and this nation deserve to live in a just and civil society, even if that breaks with tradition.
