But this misses the main point of my letter. The point is that when we descend to the immorality of our enemies, we degrade ourselves, not only in others' esteem but in our own. Do we really want to sink to the level of someone who rejoices in the death of 3,000 innocents? Is our fear so intense that we will abandon over two centuries work on a more just and free society? Do we give up on habeas corpus and civil rights to the paranoia of terrorism?

We will probably be attacked again before this era of conflict is over. But we cannot let fear and irrationality rule our lives. I believe it is our duty, as citizens of the most powerful country on earth, to work for rationality and peace even in the face of barbarism and inhumanity.
