Through the media we learn what it means to be "green" and the need to make everything "greener." What that message usually boils down to is to "come on down to the local chain store and buy some new green products! Hurry while supplies last!" Newsflash America: If you want to make a difference or do something useful just walk out your front door and do it. You don't have to follow the directions on your new box of "Public Activism (batteries sold separately)."
Community involvement to whatever end is actually quite simple. Just start talking to people, tell them what it is that you like about the way things are, and tell them some things you would like to see changed. You will inevitably discover some people with similar interests. Once you have some collective power you can petition a local government official. They are usually very attentive; it is their job after all to serve the public good. An actively aware community provides for a better residential environment.
I am issuing a call to the people of this day and age to break the habits of easy "couch media." Open your eyes, open your ears, open your mind, and step out onto the grass with bare feet and rolled up trousers!
