When Governor Douglas presented his budget, Shumlin called it a "fairy tale." When Governor Douglas proposed a housing initiative to ease the regulatory burden so developers could create housing that Vermonters could afford, Symington not only shot the idea down but wanted to add more regulations. And now that the governor is proposing an economic stimulus plan, the Democrats are shocked.
Vermonters, though, shouldn't be shocked about the state of our economy. For the past four years, the Democrats and Progressives in the Legislature have stood in the way of any real action that would help businesses and families. Their efforts have been on peripheral issues such as taxing plastic bags and requiring licenses to sell dogs. Governor Douglas has led in many ways. Now it's time for Gaye Symington and Peter Shumlin to bring up serious proposals to make Vermont more affordable.
