Their stated rationale is that chainsaws and vehicles used for manual clearing risk oil spills. This is ludicrous. However careless or badly maintained the vehicles, the risk could not compare with foliar spraying of vegetation up to eight feet in height and Garlon herbicide mixed with oil is used near wetlands.

They say herbicides have improved vastly since they last used them about 25 years ago. They can use less because they are stronger, but they are even more deadly to birds, wildlife, and any humans (such as hunters) who stray into their area of use.

In this time of the disappearance of species, loss of songbirds, water pollution and climate change, ALL stress on the environment should be avoided.
