The great thing about a democracy like ours is that new ideas can be raised, debated and decided without fear of reprisal. I applaud Susan Roy for asking the basic question "Is there a better way?" If, as a nation, we had not had people willing to ask that question, you can imagine what type of society we would be today.
When Susan and I spoke about using our new Lincoln Peak Village at Sugarbush during the Fourth of July, neither of us intended to replace or undo the wonderful tradition of the parade and street fair that David so eloquently described. We were simply asking if it might make sense to use our Lincoln Peak Village in a way that complements what already occurs in the Village of Warren.
Last year, many people parked in our parking lots and rode the Mad Bus down to the parade and then rode it back up. This helped alleviate the parking challenge and congestion on The Valley floor. After the parade, we had many families who ventured up to Lincoln Peak to participate in summer activities, a barbeque and/or a restaurant experience. Jimmy Yozell came up to the mountain after he finished at the Warren Store and there was a fireworks display after dark. Next summer we plan to have the same activities, and we would be delighted to do more if the town wished for that to happen.
However, we love the Warren Parade and the other activities surrounding it. In no way do we want to diminish the traditions of that day. If we can complement what occurs in the Village and make the Fourth of July experience even better for all, then that is what we are open to discussing with the event's planners.
