A couple of days after submitting my letter to The Valley Reporter stating my displeasure with the impending departure of the Sugarbush Resort tennis director, I was made privy to some very welcome news. Mike Smookler, tennis director at Sugarbush Resort, will be remaining at Sugarbush. Sugarbush management, namely Win Smith and Adam Greshin, reached out to Mike and made him an offer too good to refuse. Sugarbush, in so doing, has made a positive statement about its future.
As our current weather (more accurately lack of freezing temperatures and snow) to date so plainly illustrates, Sugarbush cannot rely on survival solely as a "ski resort." Sugarbush and The Valley must continue to become a multi-faceted four-season destination. Keeping Mike is a great step in showing that Sugarbush is committed to this end. I'm sure many can still remember the late '70s and early '80s when tennis was extremely popular (The Alpen Inn, The Bridges and The Sugarbush Inn come to mind) and The Valley was known as a tennis destination. Mike would love to be part of helping grow tennis here in The Valley and now he will have that opportunity to continue contributing as he has, promoting both Sugarbush and The Valley. Welcome back, Mike, I'm glad you never left.
Now, let us all think snow. After all that is a large part of why most of us live here, me included.
