To The Editor:
I am deeply disappointed regarding recent actions and statements made by Secretary of Education, Zoie Saunders, which undermine the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Vermont’s schools. Her stance contradicts the values that many in our community hold dear: fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
The Harwood Unified Union School District stands as a shining example of excellence in DEI efforts. Our district is dedicated to creating an atmosphere that supports and actively celebrates every student’s diverse identities, experiences, and needs. Harwood has invested significant time and resources to ensure that every child, regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic status, or background, feels seen, heard, and valued. This commitment has allowed us to provide essential resources, support, and opportunities for all students, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, so they can thrive.
What makes Harwood’s DEI efforts special is that they are woven into the fabric of school culture. From an inclusive curriculum to ongoing professional development for educators on culturally responsive teaching practices, we are paving the way for a more equitable and just educational environment. Harwood is committed to building strong partnerships with our community, creating spaces for meaningful dialogue, and confronting the challenges our students face inside and outside the classroom.
Rolling back DEI initiatives or minimizing this important work is a mistake and an attack on these vital efforts. Secretary Saunders’ alignment with federal policies seeking to diminish the importance of DEI in schools is deeply troubling. As the Secretary of Education, she has a responsibility to advocate for all Vermont students. Rather than retreating in the face of national pressure, she should be championing inclusive policies that reflect the needs and aspirations of our communities. Her current actions do a disservice to the students and families who trust in her leadership.
I urge Secretary Saunders to reflect on her position and take action to affirm and support the principles that make Vermont a truly inclusive and equitable place for all students. The future of our children depends on leadership that prioritizes empathy, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to diversity.
