To The Editor:

The attached photo shows the scene along Sugar Glen Drive approaching Schuss Road last week when the mud first appeared with a vengeance. We have family in Waitsfield, and visit frequently. But this was our first experience with “mud season.” It was a shock, to say the least. As our stay in Waitsfield continued, we saw the roads in our family's neighborhood deteriorate rapidly -- to the point where we practically felt like prisoners. We were thankful when the town's three-person road department deposited stone in some of the worst ruts. But within a short time, even those sections had returned to their muddy and virtually impassable state.

We can only sympathize with Waitsfield residents for having to endure road conditions that, at times, threaten their very ability to leave or return to their homes safely. With something like 30 miles of packed roads in the community, the cost and viability of paving them must seem daunting. But adding to the paved road system little by little could be achievable, and ultimately it would be a sound investment for the entire Waitsfield community.
