To The Editor:
For a while most of us thought that Trump was joking.
“I could walk on Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and it would be OK.”
Now, with the Kenosha ruling anyone can cross state lines with a machine gun to attend a protest or gathering and kill someone without consequences. Killing one person is an isolated case, but in Kenosha it became multiple victims and still without consequences. This instructs that a group of people, regardless of the size, who confront a shooter could be mowed down with impunity claiming self-defense.
When the president or any leader who declares violence as a legitimate way to behave in a civil society, they are instructing the populace to act likewise.
For years we have looked at shot-em-up games and violence in movies as entertainment and at least make believe and not part of real life. Not so sure about this now. You can take a car and ram it into a crowd as in Charlotte, and now Waukesha. The mindset that is emerging in our citizenry seemingly has been under wraps for a century and enclosed by what has been seen as “Midwest Christian values” is showing up.
It now has support in the highest offices in our land. The ex-president, Senators Tom Cruz and Gaetz in Florida are rewarding the action in Kenosha with offers for prestigious positions in the government. Rewards encourage the same acts. On top of this, the day after acquittal, 20,000 pro acquittal tweets came from China, Russia and ET -- hmmmmm.
The blowback when it comes will be devastating.
