To The Editor:

School safety has always been a local priority. The need for changes in this area was highlighted by the shooting at Essex Elementary School on August 24, 2006. Christopher Williams’ rampage killed two and left two wounded. Fortunately, no children were involved.

At that time I was the school nurse at Fayston and part of the Safety Committee. We met regularly to implement ways to protect our students from such incidents. We developed safety drills to help students learn to take cover in their classrooms. Anticipating a school shooting is heart wrenching. My hope was that gun violence prevention would be legislated.

Over the past 12 years, Maxine Grad, chair of the Judiciary Committee, has worked consistently to enact gun violence prevention legislation. This session her commitment became reality. Thank you, Maxine.

Join me and vote for Maxine Grad on November 6.
