The photo in the April 20 issue of The Valley Reporter of the Waitsfield House in Muriel de Marne's resurrected article reminds me of a strange condition not likely to be seen in any other house.

If one looks carefully at the north side of the building and follow the line of the chimney from the roof down you will see that there is space between the windows on each of the three floors for the masonry, but if you continue to grade level, it stops at the top of the entrance door frame – nothing but air! to hold the chimney up.

One has to take a look to see how the builders did it so many years ago.
