When Mad River Glen and Sugarbush Resort announced that they would sell a combined three-mountain pass, the news was greeted with surprise and then exhilaration.

In addition to the combined season’s passes, the two resorts are selling a lift ticket good for all three areas as well and doubling down on their efforts to attract younger people to the mountains.

Never in their combined 54 years of history have the two resorts collaborated so closely and so productively. Why it never happened before is a matter of lore and speculation.

It’s hard to fathom that two so very different but equally gifted ski resorts would maintain a decades-old rivalry and not really plausible that they harbored any animosity towards each other.  The Valley is much too small for anyone, let alone either of downhill ski areas, to nurse a grudge.

For whatever reason, cross marketing and selling to the other’s strong point never happened, but it is happening now – and that’s a win-win for everyone in The Valley. Kudos to the leadership that made it happen.

Best friends forever? We hope.
