Concurrently Sugarbush planned to replace snowmaking pipes running on the north side of the Sugarbush Access Road.
The same company was chosen for both projects and there was some
presumption that this would speed things along, create an economy of
construction scale and mean less disruption on the Access Road.
The road was to be closed for two weeks, August 4 to 17, Monday through
Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. But the project was not completed and the new
date for re-opening the road to one- and/or two-way traffic was supposed
to be the first day of school, August 24.
The project is not completed although the town of Warren has begun patch
repaving on the road - which has the road crew worried it might peel
off during plowing this winter.
The Warren Select Board received numerous complaints about one-way
traffic and construction delays that ranged from 10 to 30 minutes. And
woe to drivers who forgot about the project and got stuck there.
German Flats is a lovely road and so is West Hill Road -- thankfully
there are/were work-arounds to the long construction project and the
long delays and the very late completion of the work.
Here's hoping that next time this type of project is undertaken there
are some financial incentives in place to make sure that the work is
completed in a timely fashion. Delays of a week or two are
understandable, given that weather and other factors can delay a
project.
But two months is really not acceptable.
