Now that the Democrats have taken control of the U.S. House and quite possibly the Senate, and now that 28 states have Democratic governors, what is next?
What can and will the newly empowered Democratic majorities do with their power? Without Donald Rumsfeld insisting we 'stay the course' in Iraq, will these new majorities bring our troops home?
Will they opt to stay in Iraq until some semblance of normalcy or, at a minimum, order (as defined by a measure of safety and some predictable electricity) is restored?
What will these new leaders do to protect the country from the terrorism? What will they do to undo the damage done in the name of fighting 'terrorism'?
What will these new leaders do now that they have the power to actually do something about our failure to develop alternative sources of energy? What will they do to undo what Bush and his cabal did to decades' worth of environmental protections?
What can we expect from these new majorities in terms of shaping foreign policy and a sane approach to North Korea and Iran and Israel and Hamas? How will the new majorities deal with the still burgeoning federal deficit -- not to mention the still-being-calculated cost of our war in Iraq?
What can we expect from our nations' governors regarding the No Child Left Behind Act, which comes up for renewal soon? What can we expect from a House controlled by Democrats in terms of immigration policy?
Will a Senate that is controlled by Democrats (or tied with Republicans) be able to restore the Constitutionally provided balance and separation of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of our government?
This week's elections were, in the words of the leader of the free world, President George W. Bush, 'a thumping.' Will that thumping leave an administration more willing to compromise and less inclined to try the steamroller approach?
