The volunteer position of school board member is not an easy one. Harwood Unified Union School Board members dedicate themselves to evening meetings at least twice a month, in addition to subcommittee meetings for some and all the education and preparation that goes into policy making and governance.

They often have to make difficult decisions for the district to keep the budget balanced and our schools running smoothly. And their work doesn’t end outside of meetings; school board members represent the school district in the community and are contacted by community members about issues in district schools.

The school board is a crucial part of operating our local schools and ensuring students’ successes. These members of our communities are deeply passionate about education and building bright futures for all children in the district.

Eight of the 14 Harwood Unified Union School District (HUUSD) Board seats are up for election this Town Meeting Day in March. At least four members who currently hold those seats are running for reelection--Cindy Senning and Life LeGeros of Duxbury and Kelley Hackett and Jake Pitman of Waterbury--and three current school board members will not run for reelection (one member from Fayston is unknown at the time The Valley Reporter goes to press). That will leave open seats for Fayston, Moretown and Waitsfield residents.

Over the past few years, there has often been an open seat on the HUUSD Board, which puts more pressure on existing board members and can result in some towns being under-represented on school issues that affect the entire district. If you’re passionate about what happens in our schools and how to ensure education is accessible and equitable for all of our students, consider throwing your hat in the ring. It’s one way to make a big difference in our schools. Learn more about the role on huusd.org.

Anyone interested in running for school board must file a petition with their town clerk by January 30, 2023.

Thanks to all of those who have served, and who still serve and those willing to serve.
