Although some folks report that foliage is late or slow this year, fear not, Vermont’s most beautiful season is upon us.

The reds are beginning to pop at higher elevations and the tour buses have begun to arrive. As we wait and watch the panorama unfold in front of us, we do so with a sense of expectation and anticipation. Foliage season is one season that never disappoints.

Summers can be cool and rainy. Winters can be (like our last one) lacking in natural snowfall. Spring can be late or cold or wet or all three.

But foliage – even if it is cold and rainy and even if it snows – foliage is the most spectacular thing ever. Vermont’s brilliant colors look great on cloudy days and especially great when viewed through the morning fog that rises off The Valley floor and into our high hills.

Mother Nature’s gifts to us are so amazing that people flock here to see what we see every day. Let’s be patient with those who are so taken by what they are seeing that they have to drive very slowly to take it all in.

Let’s be patient with people parking on the sides of the roads and getting out of their cars to take pictures of what we get to see every day. Imagine what first-time visitors to Vermont’s foliage season must think. No wonder they have to drive slowly.

Let’s slow down ourselves and take in the vistas and viewsheds. Get out of your car and take pictures, too. Better yet, take a walk on a dirt road and take pictures. Enjoy the fall sun and cooler nights. Take the time to watch the fog rise all the way up and dissipate some morning.

Fall is fleeting. Enjoy the colors while they’re on the trees and when you’re raking them out of your yard.
