Another year, another chance to predict what might happen in the coming months. But before doing so, there are a few things that no one could have predicted about what happened in 2014 in The Valley.
Not predicted 1: A massive fire destroyed 36 Mountainside Condo units in Sugarbush Village with firefighters from six towns responding to the blaze. The entire complex was full at the time and all people and pets were safe. Permitting is under way for reconstruction.
Not predicted 2: A well-planned and researched Valley Economic Study led to an economic summit that was the hit of the summer (second in attendance only to the Warren Fourth of July parade). And speaking of this summer, who knew the Round Up on the River and the Mad River Green evening concert series would be so successful and so much fun.
Not predicted 3: A 298-acre hill farm in Fayston would be donated to Vermont Land Trust by Skip Tenney and two local couples would be named to farm it in support of two local businesses. Thanks, Skip!
And some of our predictions last year and our accuracy:
2014 Prediction 1: The miscreant vandal or vandals who caused $100,000 in damage to the school in May 2013 will be caught. We were wrong, miscreant still at large.
2014 Prediction 2: The dangerous intersection of Route 100B and Moretown Mountain Road will not be fixed. Sorta, kinda, there were some long delays and detours and Moretown Mountain Road has been rebuilt, but the sightlines are no better.
2014 Prediction 3: There will be beer. Canteen Brewery and Pub will get permits to open at Mad River Green Shops. Wrong! Turns out there is not enough septic at Mad River Green Shops to accommodate the super-nutrient-dense effluent from a brewery. But a new restaurant is opening there this month.
2014 Prediction 5: U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders will be greeted like a rock star at the Warren Fourth of July parade. This is one thing you can safely bank on. The socialist senator is greeted like a rock star wherever he goes in Vermont.
See you here next year to compare notes.
