Warren Elementary School hosted regional spelling bee

Last Saturday, November 3, Warren Elementary School hosted the regional spelling bee, in which they came in second.

“It was a very, very close second,” principal Wendy Cobb said. “We lost by two points—which is one word,” she explained.

According to Cobb, Warren’s team, which consisted of Lila Montgomery, Eleanor Reilly, Tristan Connell, Tucker Mays, Sophie Rosen and Ahna Noel, was neck and neck with the team from Barre City for almost the entire event, until Barre City pulled ahead for the win.

Even still, with the help of coaches Heidi Ringer and Laurie Jones, “the kids worked really hard,” Cobb said. “They did their best, and we’re really proud of them.”

HUMS spelling team places second in regional bee

On Saturday, November 3, 2012, the Harwood Union spelling team traveled to Barre Town School for the VPA Regional Spelling Bee Team Competition and came home with second place. This year’s team included seventh-graders Erin Magill and Posey LaBombard and eighth- graders Colin Fennelly, Anneka Williams, Kathryn Pilliod and Michaela Magee (who was not present for the bee). Barre Town took a commanding lead in the first rounds, correctly spelling every bonus word. The Harwood team nailed every word on the regular spelling list (which they had tirelessly studied), but had a few missed bonus words. Harwood closed the gap in the last four rounds, but it was not enough to match the strong Barre Town team. Walden School took third, South Royalton fourth and The Sharon Academy took fifth place in Saturday’s bee.

Veteran spelling coach Judi Gross had only praise for her 2012 spelling team, stating, “The students this year were the best prepared team in my seven years of coaching. We got tripped up on some bonus words, which are chosen randomly from every word in the English language! The Barre Town team performed amazingly this year, and we congratulate them – anyone who can beat us really deserves it!”
