To The Editor:

This letter is addressed to Waitsfield voters.

On July 30, we have an opportunity to vote on a bond issue to support the construction of a new town office. I am voting yes, and I encourage others to do so. Waitsfield is the commercial center of our valley and our town staff, boards, commissions, committees and citizens manage a wide range of complex projects. The current space under the library has long been inadequate for this significant work for a variety of reasons: insufficient vault space, cramped office and filing space, limited public meeting space, flood vulnerability, and – most recently – failing septic.

The town has secured a grant of $750,000 toward construction of the Farm Stand site, available to us only if we secure the additional bond funds through public vote on July 30. The Town Office Task Force worked diligently to develop the most cost-effective option that meets the varied needs of a town office space – the Farm Stand option.

Do we all agree that new construction at the Farm Stand site is the ideal option? Nope. Do we need to redouble our efforts to care for and maintain the viability of our historic village? Absolutely. But in the meantime we have funding on the table to create the working space that our town has desperately needed for more than a decade, and the only way we can secure this funding and make this long overdue project happen is to vote yes on July 30.
