That thoughtless act is in direct contradiction of what the Fourth really stands for and what our grand parade celebrates: citizenship. We're free in this country to do so many good things, but stealing other people's stuff is not one of them.

So, parents, if you see a colorful vinyl banner for an Arts Festival offering on your kid's bedroom wall, take it down and return it to the chamber of commerce on Main Street in Waitsfield. If it's on your playroom wall, shame on you! If it was picked up in error, then shame on me for being so preachy!

We really need both those signs back by August 1 for the start of the Festival. Please...
