To The Editor:
I am not currently in Waitsfield. Therefore, I cannot attend the public meeting regarding the town office to make my pitch in person. However, I have been following the discussions closely.
I wholeheartedly agree with the authors of the letters in last week's Valley Reporter advocating the use of the Methodist Church building for the new town office. Cost is certainly important, as is the loss of the apartments. On the other hand, the unique historical and environmental beauty of our town, which not only makes it special for us but also is a big part of what makes it a tourist destination from which we all benefit, is our responsibility to protect. A new building will be functional, but it will not have the character and soul that a renovated historic one, particularly one as beautiful as the church building, has.
We are making a decision for decades to come and the cost differential per household seems small enough to be worth preserving our heritage. Furthermore, that cost differential might be significantly reduced via means such as those suggested in the previous letters (e.g., fundraisers, grants, etc.). I hope others will agree with me.
