To The Editor:
In this terrible economy where everyone is trying to cut back just to survive, why is the town of Waitsfield, i.e., the select board, so obsessed with purchasing the Flemer property on Main Street? One parcel, for a possible location for the new town office, is $100,000. The second parcel, with two barns, is $250,000. The uses for this parcel, suggested by numerous special interest groups is as follows: a youth and community center, a cultural center, art center, gathering space for schoolchildren, agricultural center. This could only happen after the smaller barn had been completely renovated, at what additional cost to the town? One of the suggestions for the larger barn was to rent out the horse stalls. What about the horse barn that was built a few years ago at Route 100 and Route 17 and still remains empty?
Assessing the feasibility of the Methodist Church (or some other existing location) for town offices is a great idea. How about doing the same with other vacant buildings in town? As an example, maybe Egan's would be the place for a youth center, etc. (lots of room, kitchen, bathrooms). Will the total cost of this project be in the best interests of all our residents? Perhaps Virginia Houston could buy this property for her bottling plant. The pipeline is already in, she could tap into her aquifer, and there would be more than enough water for everyone, not to mention tax dollars for the town and jobs!
