The Harwood Union alpine ski teams competed Wednesday, March 5, in the final portion of the 2014 state ski meets. The event was slalom and the site was Burke Mountain. The Harwood girls' team entered the day in sixth place with the Harwood boys in eighth. For both teams a top-three finish overall was a team goal and hopes were high heading into the slalom event.

Megan O'Shea (10th) and Sophie Dasaro (15th) paced the Harwood girls with two solid runs down the 60-gate course on Burke's race trail. Maddie Lowe (28th), Mercedes Woolley (50th), Sarah Wry (59th) and Anna Belongia (62nd) all put in great efforts but could not advance the team from the sixth-place position.

Austin Taylor paced the Harwood boys' team with two solid runs to place 15th overall. Teammates John Egan (22nd), Matt Crowell (23rd), Ben Friedman (33rd) and Parker Herlihy (50th) also put in fine efforts for the team and moved the Harwood boys up to fifth overall in the meet.

Megan O'Shea and Austin Taylor qualified to represent Harwood and the Vermont team at the Eastern High School Championships which took place on March 8 and 9 at Attitash, NH. The team is comprised of the top 12 boys and girls from Vermont.

Harwood skiers compete at the EHSC

Two Harwood alpine ski team members capped off successful seasons competing at the Eastern High School Championships held the weekend of March 8 and 9 at Attitash, NH. Megan O'Shea and Austin Taylor qualified for the Vermont team based on results from the state ski meets held last week. States east of the Mississippi send teams each year to this big event. Each state selects the top 12 skiers to field their teams.

Megan's results were an 18th in the giant slalom and 62nd in the slalom. Megan stood in sixth place after the first run of the slalom. Taylor finished 56th in the slalom and did not finish the giant slalom. For both racers it was a great experience, their coach Steve Skilton said.
