To The Editor:
A few years ago, my husband and I moved back to Vermont to start our family. The values and educational opportunities in Vermont make it our ideal environment for raising our two children. But it can be even better through the passage of H.270, which would expand the availability of quality pre-kindergarten education. It would require all school districts in Vermont to provide or pay for at least 10 hours per week of prekindergarten education for 35 weeks per year for all 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children.
The vast majority (90 percent) of brain development occurs by age 5 setting the stage for future learning and social-emotional development. I see evidence of rapid brain development in my own children on an almost daily basis. I want to nurture that growth, and a quality pre-K program can help me do that. The best opportunity we can offer our children for success in school and beyond is to provide them with a quality early experience to help them reach their full potential.
Please join me in urging our legislators to help our children, the future leaders of Vermont, succeed by making sure this bill passes.
