To The Editor:
Was it because of it being the vacation week for Harwood and the elementary school? Was it because the vast majority of the community now is in favor of the Farm Stand site? This time we could not blame the weather! Although the meager attendance at last night's event was disappointing, there still appeared to be a balance of the different perspectives voiced at the information public meeting hosted by the Waitsfield Select Board.
It was clear that there is still a desire to renovate the historic Methodist church/Luminosity building; however, by the end of the evening, every concern received a respectful and reasonable response, in my view. As an architect with a specialty in historic preservation, I too favored the renovation idea over new construction. After last night, it became clear that the Town Office Task Force (TOTF) had looked at this project from all angles and took careful consideration of as many perspectives as they could.
The proposed plan was executed so sensitively that after completion, the new town hall should look like it was there for generations. Nestled between two other small-scale buildings, the massing of the proposed building fits right in. The architects and the TOTF carefully considered the design of the proposed town hall within the context of a tiny, rural, historic village. It is very hard to argue against the site's location in the historic village and, more importantly, its ability to access the Flemer Field community green. For over two and a half years the TOTF has been working tirelessly for our town and all their effort truly shows.
I support the proposed plan from the TOTF and encourage Waitsfield residents to vote yes for the bond article that will set in motion this desperately needed project.
